There’s No Such Thing As ‘Porn Addiction"

Battling a pornography addiction may mean that you are also battling an internet addiction The two are closely related because most porn is freely and readily available online. A porn addiction is so much more that merely looking at erotic material for sexual fulfillment. It can be used in a healthy sexual relationship to add a bit of ‘spice"!

Looking at pornography frequently is an addiction. Yet society looks the other way at pornography, dismissing it as harmless “men’s entertainment.” The pornography industry renamed itself the “adult entertainment industry” to create the perception that it’s just entertainment. The reality is that porn is extremely addictive, and along with the addiction comes life-destroying side effects. It puts the addict into a creepy bondage that affects the lives of those around him or her. It is not a victimless crime. It has become a chilling epidemic that is ruining the minds, families and jobs of possibly half the men in the country.

Porn addicts today can feed their Internet porn problem by viewing online still photos, downloading porn videos, or by having webcam sex (paid and unpaid). Some use the Internet to simply view images while others eventually end up using the Internet as a vehicle to meet with anonymous sexual partners. The ‘new media" of smartphones offers some addicts instant phone-based porn downloads along with wherever/whenever live video streaming of sexual activities, while Facebook can leave some cruising images and profiles for hours on end. What is porn addiction?

Seeking help and admitting that you have and are battling an addiction to porn is embarrassing and often humiliating, but to overcome the addiction, these feelings must be ignored. Taking the first step to recovery is the first step to regaining control of your life. Regardless of what someone is addicted to, the addiction itself begins to control all aspects of your life. So choosing to admit to the porn addiction and recognizing the need for help is a step towards the path of living a life with positive behaviors.

One of the most overwhelming myths is that a porn addiction is caused simply by the need for sexual gratification. This is simply not true. Sex addiction is not about the euphoria achieved from masturbation or orgasm resulting from the viewing the porn. It does however contribute to the role in reinforcing the behavior. A porn addiction is more about the taboo and the novelty of the pornography itself. A porn addict typically gets a certain type of thrill or a sense of excitement from viewing the pornographic content and feeling as thought the “actors” are putting on the show specifically for the viewer.
